What is a Keyboard Workstation?

Keyboard Workstation

keyboard workstation is equipped with tools for both performers and composers alike. In addition to basic “bread and butter sounds” that professional keyboards typically come with, a workstation generally has more synth sounds and more effects, as well as other music creation tools too numerous to mention in this context. Whether you’re a “one-man band,” performing in a group, or writing original music, the workstation can accomodate your musical needs.

Tone Generator
Keyboard workstations provide you with a greater palette for creating original sounds and effects than other types of professional keyboards. Workstations employ different methods of sound synthesis, most commonly pulse-code modulation, which is a method used to digitally represent sampled analog signals. With a great amount of control and ability to modulate hundreds of preset sounds, the keyboard workstation gives you the power to completely design and shape your own sound.

Sampling
If you’ve ever heard a sound out in the world, such as a car door slamming or an exotic instrument, perhaps the musician in you wanted to add that sound to the library on your keyboard. With keyboard workstations, you can do just that through a technique called sampling. Sampling allows you to digitally record any sound and reproduce it in varying pitches on your keyboard. This tool is especially useful for composers who are looking to create unique or authentic sounds for their music.
Sequencing or Audio Recording
Whether you’re performing live or writing original music, sequencing can be your friend. With the push of just a few buttons, you can record numerous parts of accompaniment on your keyboard, except the ones you are going to perform live, and play along with the sequenced backing track. Also, if you are performing cover music and want to produce more authentic covers, the workstation gives you options for reproducing the music more accurately, such as pre-programmed MIDI files. Some workstations also have a vocal harmonizer function to provide backup vocals while you perform.
Effects Processing
Applying effects to a MIDI or audio track can turn an ordinary sound into something special. All keyboard workstations include onboard effects processors. Many feature effects that can be applied to individual tracks (insert effects) as well as to the total mix (master effects). Additionally, workstations that include audio recording capability usually provide important sound shaping tools such as EQ and dynamics processing. This gives you even more control over the final sound that you produce with your keyboard workstation.

Hands On: Soundcraft Si Expression 2

Hands On: Soundcraft Si Expression 2

Soundcraft’s new Si Expression mixing consoles combine all the power of digital with the usability and functionality of analog. I received a 24-channel Si Expression 2 for this “Hands On” article – Soundcraft also makes the 16-channel Si Expression 1 and the 32-channel Si Expression 3. (All three models feature up to 66 channels for processing.) Each input channel has an XLR mic input with preamp and phantom power; four line ins are provided on 1/4″ connectors. There are also 16 XLR balanced outputs. Rounding out the I/O are AES digital ins and outs, MIDI I/O, and a word clock in.
There’s so much power in this console; we’re talking, for example, four independent Lexicon effects processors, and EQ and dynamics on every channel. But even with all that power, it’s easy to navigate the Si Expression. The front panel has a large section up top, with dedicated control sections, knobs, and switches for input, dynamics, EQ, and output, which follows whatever channel you select. No paging through menus to grab those oft-used controls; they’re right there under your fingers. The motorized faders give you instant feedback on how your mix is dialed.
The master section includes four mute groups, global mode switches, headphone out and level control, effects control, and a touchscreen for managing everything. An expansion card slot allows for a variety of additional functionality, including interfacing with a recording system. You’ll find the Si Expression fast to learn and very fast to use – wielding an iPad running the Soundcraft ViSi app streamlines it even further.
Of course, the crux of the biscuit is that Si Expression consoles sound great, and they have the complement of features required for live sound, whether you’re rocking a band or providing sound for worship. If you’re an old hand with live sound consoles or new to the game, the Si Expression is a mixer that will do the job for you, with stellar results!

AIRA ROLAND

AIRA

AIRA_landscape_light
Roland has been teasing us since before Winter NAMM with sneaky videos and tantalizing photos of their upcoming AIRA family of products. Today, the teasing ends and AIRA is officially unveiled! A new line of music-making gear based on legendary products that have become must-haves for many styles of music, the AIRA family features obsessively analyzed re-creations of the originals that faithfully replicate every detail and nuance of the analog circuitry, AIRA brings the classics into the modern age. Whether used alone or together, the AIRA family delivers the sounds music makers of all genres want with modern features, reliability, and style. The AIRA family includes four members:

TR-8 Rhythm Performer — Introduced in the 1980s, the TR-808 and TR-909 are often cited as the most influential drum machines of all time. The sounds of the TRs remain staples in today’s music, defining the sound of genres and remaining fresh more than three decades later. The TR-8 Rhythm Performer brings you full reproductions of the original TR-808 and TR-909 rhythm machines using newly developed Analog Circuit Behavior (ACB) technology. In addition to all the features of the originals (up to 32-step pattern sequencing, 16 pads, and more), you can build hybrid kits containing whatever 808 and 909 sounds you desire, add per-step Gate Reverb and Delay effects, mix in external sources, seamlessly create patterns, real-time play any of for different rolls, quickly mute/unmute instruments, randomize patterns, use the innovative SCATTER functionality to “freak and tweak” your grooves, connect to your computer via USB, receive MIDI clock sync, integrate seamlessly other AIRA instruments, and tons more! It’s the 808 and 909 evolved.

TB-3 Touch Bassline — Created in 1981, the TB-303 Bassline was the defining sound of Acid House and other styles of electronic music. Using ACB technology, the TR-3 brings back the sound and feel of the TB-303: all those signature bass sounds are right at your fingertips! The TB-3 has 134 sounds onboard, with all the unmistakable character of the TB, including the 18dB/octave ladder low-pass filter. The new pressure-sensitive touch pad brings amazing performance capabilities to the TB-3, while the step sequencer makes it a breeze to create the patterns you conceive. The innovative SCATTER functionality features slicing, reverse, gating, and other effects, instantly taking the TB-3 to an entirely new creativity-inspiring level. Like the TR-3, the TB-3 features USB, MIDI clock sync, and seamless integration with other AIRA series units.

System-1 Variable Plug-out Synthesizer — Bringing back the sound and feel of Roland’s 1970s-era SYSTEM 100, SYSTEM 100M, and SYSTEM 700 modular and semi-modular synths, the SYSTEM-1 also breaks new ground with remarkable flexibility and a vast palette of ACB-based synthesized sounds. But there’s more — a lot more: Roland calls the SYSTEM-1 a “plug-out” synthesizer. This means the SYSTEM-1 can host software recreations of classic Roland synths. These “plug-outs” run right on the SYSTEM-1 hardware, so no computer is required. The first plug-out to be announced is the legendary SH-101, but this is just the beginning; expect many more classics to become available soon. An advanced arpeggiator is built-in, with SCATTER functionality allowing for incredible phrase variations. Modern effects like “Crush” bring a modern edge, along with USB connectivity, MIDI clock sync, and tight integration with other AIRA instruments.

VT-3 Voice Transformer — Processed vocals are a sonic mainstay of today’s music, and with the new VT-3, you get incredible vocal effects power! Singing synth effects, VP-330-style vocoder effects, hard-tuned effects, robot voices, lo-fi vocals, and more are right at your fingertips, with built-in reverb, wet/dry fader control, and instant bypass. Three presets let you store your favorite settings. Pitch and Formant each get their own fader for real-time control. An XLR combi jack provides phantom power for condenser mics, stereo outputs can be configured as wet/dry outputs, USB connectivity allows loopback recording to overdub vocals on existing tracks, and so much more. The VT-3 is meant to be played live, with real-time control, brightly lit controls, and fast, dead-simple operation.

Loudness — under control

Fully integrated loudness metering solution

The metering section in Nuendo 6 has been rebuilt from scratch. Next to the large-scale volume meter, that is also capable of showing multi-channel surround signals, you'll find the new loudness metering section.
In the past years the loudness level especially in TV advertising has been increased dramatically. Particularly commercial breaks differ clearly from other parts of the TV program. In order to harmonize the loudness level and to achieve a higher dynamic range — and not a higher peak level or an increased compression rate — the new EBU R128 loudness norm has been introduced.
The loudness meter in Nuendo 6 is capable of displaying Integrated, Momentary and Short Term loudness. This enables you to keep track of the loudness of your audio material in order to ensure to mix after EBU-standards .
Setting new standards — Nuendo 6 Loudness Lane
Nuendo 6 sets new standards in loudness measurement. While common loudness tools only show specific values in real-time, Nuendo 6 writes a loudness curve on a separate track-based on short-term loudness, which dramatically helps to judge if the mix is EBU-compliant. Loud and quiet scenes can now be mixed with unmatched precision, adding that extra finesse to your audio material that makes it well balanced.
